How to Replace Recessed Light Fixtures

Replacing recessed lighting fixtures is a simple task requiring attention to safety and a small investment of time.

  1. First: Safety first

Ensure that the circuit breaker supplying electrical power to the lighting fixture is disengaged and, if possible, locked out of service. Securing the circuit breaker prevents accidental shocks and fires. Also, since most recessed lighting is elevated, use a sturdy ladder with all four legs placed flat upon the floor, and do not climb any higher than the second step from the top. Climbing higher upon a ladder than recommended unbalances it, and you can tip and fall over more easily.

  2. Second: Removing the old fixture

The first step to replacing recessed lighting is to remove the old bulb, trim and fixtures using a pair of needle-nosed pliers. Once these parts are removed, taking measurements is recommended for purchasing replacement fixtures.

  3. Third: Removing old fixtures

Although the trim and casing are removed, the bracketing to hold these components is still in place. After verifying that the circuit breaker is still disengaged, detach the power supply cables and remove the bracket. With the case removed, dispose of the old components.

  4. Fourth: Installing new fixtures

Once the old pieces are removed, the new case is easily attached and the power supply wires are connected by matching the colors of the wiring to the connections in the new case. After the new case is wired in, attach the new fixture canister, trim and bulb, and place any brackets needed to position the light.

  5. Fifth: Restoring power

After the replacement fixture is installed, activate the circuit breaker to deliver electricity to the light. The replacement process is complete with this step.
