How to Install Recessed Lighting

Installing recessed lighting is an easy and affordable way to give your home a modern and stylish look. The only requirement to install recessed lighting is a drywall ceiling, which is a common feature in most modern houses.

1. First: Choose lamps and mark positions

   Choose an appropriate number of lights with sufficient power. Remember that is easier to install more lights and then turn off a few when not needed than it is to use a badly lit room. If you have insulation, choose lights rated for that insulation. After determining the number of light spots, mark their positions on the ceiling with a pencil.

2. Second: Drilling holes

   Most light fixtures come with a paper template to help you mark the hole where they fit. Center the template on the pencil mark you made before and outline the shape of the hole. Cut the paper of the drywall along this line. Drill a large hole somewhere inside that line and, with a drywall saw, cut from this hole until the outer line, splitting the area into small piece, just like cutting a pie in slices. When done, push these slices up and they will break easily. Cut the paper that still holds the drywall slices to the ceiling and make small adjustments to the hole as needed.

3. Third: Wiring

   Turn of the power and run wires inside the ceiling from the nearest junction box to the holes for the lights. Connect all the lights according to the instructions from the manufacturer. Connect the power and test them. Make all necessary adjustments and tidy up the wiring inside the ceiling to prevent electrical hazards.

4. Fourth: Fit the lights

   After checking all the wiring, push the light fixtures into the holes until they are flush and tighten the clamps to secure them. If needed, install additional safety glass. You are done! Enjoy the new lights.
