FAQs About Mounting Can Lights

Unlike many other types of lighting, canned or recessed lighting is simple to install, and is capable of producing a variety of lighting effects. Before mounting recessed lighting fixtures, consider a few pointers and placement issues to maximize the impact of your new lights.

Q: What types of ceiling materials are ideal for installation and mounting of recessed lighting?
A: Most newer homes (built in 2000 and newer) are perfectly compatible with the standard materials and installation requirements of can lights. Older homes, on the other hand, may require the skills of a professional electrician who can accurately assess the lighting requirements of concrete, plaster or elaborately detailed ceilings.
Q: Are there any special placement guidelines to consider when mounting more than one can light fixture?
A: Yes, the general rule of thumb is to allow one foot of distance for every inch in diameter of the lighting fixture. Most can fixtures are available with either a four or six inch diameter, but this rule is applicable for all sizes.
Q: What different types of can lights are available?
A: Before selecting and mounting can lights, think about the desired effect. Down light fixtures direct the light in only one direction: straight down. Ideally, these lights are mounted in areas which require general lighting rather than focused or directional light. For a more versatile lighting option, eyeball light fixtures are adjustable at the user's discretion to highlight a certain area or showcase an intended focal point. Mount these in such a way that the light can effectively reach the desired area.
