FAQs About Cleaning Recessed Lights

Cleaning recessed lighting fixtures is somewhat confusing. Everyone seems to know how to clean an external hanging fixture, but something built into the ceiling is another subject entirely. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions that can guide you through the process.
- Q: Is it safe to touch the recessed lighting while the lights are turned on?
- A: While touching the glass of a lit recessed light does not give you an electrical shock, the glass is probably very hot to the touch and may burn you. Before attempting to change or clean a recessed light fixture or any light fixture in your home, turn the lights off well in advance to allow the bulb to cool. If you are unsure about the temperature of the bulb once it is turned off, use a kitchen towel as a buffer between your skin and the glass. If you can feel heat through the towel, the fixture is still too hot to touch.
- Q: Can you use a cleaning spray on your recessed lighting?
- A: The best products to use on recessed lighting are mild, biodegradable cleaners or just plain soapy water. Never spray cleaning solution directly into recessed lighting. Remember, your lights are an electric mechanism, the same as an electrical outlet. You should use the same precautions with your recessed lighting as an outlet. If you like to dust your lighting, a feather duster or lint-free cloth works best.
- Q: What do you do about the glass covering your recessed light?
- A: Remove the glass cover carefully and wash it with soapy water. Dry it completely before putting it back up.
